The Next Gen internet users, todays youth, prefer internet messenger not E-mail
to communicate with their peers. That has implications for the workplace of the
future and the marketers.
Its 1.30A.M but sleep is the last thing on Shivams mind. The 26 year old
student of Delhi University just watched Hum Tum, and must switch on the
computer to IM( instant message) his buddies about how unbelievable the
experience was. The next day four people on his buddy list saw the film and they
discussed it.
Movie critics can go take a walk. Shivam is just one of the new breed of young
Indians who are deciding what to be watched or to be buyed or to be done,
depending on those whom they can really trust. Their buddies in the yahoo
messenger! Chat is not just a killer application. Its fast becoming the most
preferred application on the internet for the youth demographic. For those who
came in late, the most popular chat softwares in India are Yahoo! Messenger
(with 5 million users) and MSN messenger (with 10 million unique users a month
in India)
Most of the young adults in the age group of 18 24 use these products and 50% of
them are students. Instant messengers typically pop up everytime you get online
to the internet and immediately show you which friends or contacts are online.
The cool thing about messenger is that you can chat in real time even as you do
several other things simultaneously. Alt”Tab is the surfers best friend, says
Kabs of Mumbais JBMS college.
Youths roughly 18, 19 and 20 years old are third generation internet users, and
to them E-mail is an akin to getting dressed up for a job interview, and
uncomfortable formality is avoided unless absolutely necessary. In the Indian
context one cannot say Email is redundant. Young people certainly do check their
inbox as their matter of routine or habbit.
Instant messaging uses also varies. There is the always on variety like Delhi
University student Shivam who remains online 10 hours a day during vacations and
6 to 8 hours otherwise. He is also a part of small but growing number of
students also connected to Yahoo! Messenger via their cell phones.
Kabbu (fondly known as Kabs on the Internet) the JBMS college student, on the
other hand uses the messenger only around once a week, that too mostly to keep
in touch with friends he made from around the world during the youngsters meet
in Mumbai.
Is the instant messenger an unnecessary distraction? Instant messenger savvy
young people things the positive are far too many and in the end it all depends
how you use the technology.
